Why is there a need for Environmotional Education?
An emotional connection is so important in today's learning!
In recent years the research into the role of emotions in education has been increasing, programs like the The Environmotional Awareness Shows give students an emotional attachment & much needed emotional release around what they are learning about sustainability & climate change. Students are constantly bombarded with information at school & in the media about natural disarsters, resource depletion, flora & fauna extinction & much more that leaves them feeling, anxiety, fear, anger & helplessness.
‘I don't think we've really come to terms with the extent to which these global threats become part of young people's personal experience or personal environment and the impact they have, what is clear is a body of research showing that the experience of climate change itself is causing serious mental disorders in children’. says Richard Eckersley, of the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health at the Australian National University.” - SMH 2011
This emotional perspective is an important aspect often left out within Environmental Education & Music has a proven unrivalled ability to connect at an emotional level.
The songs provide much needed emotional release for how students may be feeling about sustainability & climate change issues, for example, feelings like; fear, anxiety, despair, anger, frustration, apathy, indifference, & guilt. This emotional release often leads to motivation, stimulation & enjoyment around the topics & towards making changes in their school & wider communities.
What sort of outcomes can be expected?
Outcomes - shifted attitudes & released feelings around climate change & sustainability, motivation & inspiration to take action, deeper understanding of the key topics & current global issues, ongoing information & opportunities for joining with other young people involved in climate change & sustainability work
What follow-up is provided?
At the conclusion of the show there is opportunity for discussion & information & resources are provided that can be easily implemented in students lives allowing them to become active agents of positive change in their communities along with access to a range of follow-up support and resources on & offline including the Social, Self & Environmental Awareness Blog which is a growing resource on sustainability, climate change, water, energy, ecology, combined with climate change fear, despair, anger, motivation & inspiration.
