The DVD was made in the United States on a $250, 000 budget as part of the most sucessful in school drink driving program in the USA. The DVD helps to engage the students before moving into the music aspect of the performance and opening up other topics.
The music performance covers broader issues: Social & emotional wellbeing, drug & alcohol issues, self esteem, depression, bullying, violence, abuse, loss & bereavement, social & environmental consciousness, positive thinking & decision making. This multi modal show suits all year levels, covering a broad range of issues and has a deep impact on students through the combined mediums of multimedia and music.
Drink driving has had a huge impact on the life of the program developer Rich Latimer & his family & friends. Having supported siblings after the loss of loved ones due to drink driving accidents, lost high school friends & most recently going through the near loss of his little brother after a drink drive crash that left one dead & his brother with very little chance of survival.
This show is based around a song that was written as a prayer of hope that his little brother would survive & played daily to him when Rich visited him in the ICU. It has now become a prayer of hope that others will not go through a similar situation.
The show also uses a real world simulated drink drive crash that is based around the story of Rich's little brothers crash, filmed in the USA where Rich was invited to sing & speak on the topic in a number of High Schools in the USA as part of their Every 15 Minutes program.
As part of the show students are encouraged to reach out not only to staff & support services in their school & community but also to the artists & our teams online via the social media networks. This creates a platform for further discussion & allows students to "Share their Story" on these forums as well as seek help & referral, all mandatory reporting guidelines are followed.

It has been proven that impacting only a small number within a given community such as a school, limits the ability for those attitude shifts to be maintained & lessen the impact of the given educational outcome. Awareness Shows is unique in it's WHOLE SCHOOL approach. But the result are proof, with many schools seeing school wide shifts in attitudes & lots of feedback & discussion after the shows.
There can never be enough of this type of education!
Schools who can't see the need for youth centred communication approaches & school wide social & emotional wellbeing education like Awareness Shows, are simply not in touch with their student communities or the regional, state and national news. There can never be enough of this type of education, even if it saves one life it's worth it! |
